Keeping students safe at home on Chromebooks

Morena All,

I have had a few questions this year regarding keeping students safe online at home on chromebooks.

This mainly occurs when they are using school Google accounts on unmanaged Chromebooks at home or managed devices in off hours mode.

Schools can use Chrome extensions to manage and filter their users browsing when logged in with their school accounts. If schools don’t have an extension that does this then families can use the N4L switched on safety settings as per this resource or now they can use family link to manage the personal account and add the school account as a secondary account. This will inherit the family link settings and therefore lockdown the browsing to the family settings whilst using the school account.

Setting up family link on child devices has a few steps but it is worth the time taken to keep your kids safe on line. A video showing the setup can be seen below

And this video below explain explains how the process of adding school accounts to family link works.

If a parent is using family link to manage their student’s personal google account, which is great practice, they can now apply the same settings to their student’s school account whilst they are at home.

The info on how to do it is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3XxAprzHW8&feature=emb_logo and https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/9900467?hl=en This is a nice step up in safety for families while at home using school accounts.

A video looking at both Family link and Be Internet awesome can be seen below. These two resources can help to keep students safe online.
